Thanks for looking! Rock on.The year before Van Halen put out their self-titled debut, the biggest things in rock were long, ponderous solos and the back-to-basics riffing of the Sex Pistols and Ramones. Please note, I may adjust shipping rate depending on where in the Continental U.S. This one in particular, has incredible sentimental value, so if it sells for the listed price, cool, if not, I will continue to play and enjoy it. Like many of you, I can’t afford to keep them all, cause I need to pay for the next batch of gear. I’m a player who digs collectible guitars that look, play and sound amazing. It’s so rare to find an instrument that looks and sounds exactly like you’ve dreamed about. The case is in good shape, it’s the one that came with the guitar. I’ve seen this done on other San Dimas early Charvels, and I get why, it’s not easy to access the truss rods especially on the fly, during a gig, etc. There’s a small area that was routed to gain easier access to the truss rod for adjustments. Frets, dunno If they are original but they are in excellent shape with plenty of miles left to shred. The neck is in GREAT shape, worn but not dinged or dented. What else.the nut, tuners and pickup are all original. 1 11/16 and 1 5/8 spec necks are great too, but when you want to get it right and hard rock is your jam, wide is the ride, baby! The wide 1 3/4 nut is SO comfortable, it’s the best spec for a super strat shredder axe. The original Dimarzio super distortion humbucker nails the spirit and vibe of 79-81 era VH. And this guitar has got all the tone and mojo you’re ever gonna need. Anyhow, all of us players back then tinkered, tried out different parts and nothing was sacred, it was all in the spirit of tone chasing. I suppose it matters if you’re a stickler for supreme authenticity, but tone is what matters to me, and it doesn’t impact the tone of this guitar one bit. I know some may think “Khaler?!” and you’re welcome to your opinion. Options were limited back in the day, you either upgraded to a Floyd, which were not in large supply or a Khaler, which were more readily available. The original Charvels came stock with a tremolo that most consider unusable for serious whammy bar acrobatics. This isn’t a case Queen, it’s spent 40 years inspiring its owners to play better, sound better and deliver kick ass rock and roll.

The great ones are meant to be played not displayed. This particular EVH Charvel Bumblebee has been played a lot, by its original owner and me. It is a work of art and a tone machine that is built to be played, recorded and gigged. This isn’t an assembly line production guitar.

Each EVH San Dimas Charvel Bumblebee that was made during 1979-1982 was hand painted and they’re all a little different, no two are exactly alike. This guitar is different than ALL of the other tributes, limited editions and one offs that came after it. But they don’t hold a candle to the real thing.

Then of course, there’s the Art series and MIM production models, etc. It’s forever associated with Van Halen II and infamous for the original being buried with Dimebag, an innovator and master musician in his own right.īefore Eddie sadly left us (RIP), FMIC released a limited edition signed 1979 Tribute Charvel Bumblebee that goes for 20k or more if you can even find one. The Bumblebee has a rabid cult following though, no question. For many, it’s the Frankie Red, White, Black. So, Charvel stopped making them and immediately, the hunt for these Southern California sonic treasures was on.Įveryone has their favorite EVH stripe graphic. Jackson did not have Eddie’s approval to sell them with the striped graphics that were essentially his trademark. The Holy Grail of custom graphics San Dimas early Charvels is unquestionably the EVH Bumblebee. Comfortable, lightning fast, and hand rubbed oil finish that ages the neck and fretboard into a gorgeous worn in patina the more it’s played. Today, those instruments and their paint jobs are revered and sought by players, collectors and enthusiasts alike.Īs many of you know, these early Charvels not only look cool, they have a tone and feel that is often imitated, never equaled. In those magical early days, the artisans at the San Dimas shop cranked out some insanely creative and fun graphics. When it comes to custom graphics, Charvel is the undisputed champ.
